Tell your MP: Remove Hikvision from the UK

We are closer than ever to getting Hikvision and Dahua surveillance technology banned from the UK. But we need your help…

Hikvision is a Chinese state-owned company that is directly complicit in human rights abuses against Uyghurs, Tibetans and other peoples under CCP rule. The UK government has also recognised its security cameras as a security risk.

Despite this, Hikvision cameras can still be found in government departments, local councils, police stations and even hospitals up and down the UK.

We now have a huge opportunity to change this.

In the coming weeks, MPs will debate the Procurement Bill. An amendment to the bill is on the table, specifying that surveillance equipment produced by companies like Hikvision be removed from the UK government’s procurement supply chain, and requiring the government to commit to a plan for the removal of such surveillance equipment.

These strong commitments are exactly what we need if we want to ensure Hikvision is removed from the UK. The government has already tried to water down the Procurement Bill – we need you to tell your MP why this amendment is so vital, for the UK and for the Uyghur community.

Help us Ban Hikvision in 3 easy steps:

Dear XXX

I am writing to you about the Procurement Bill and, in particular, urging you to support the amendment proposed by Sir Iain Duncan Smith, specifying that surveillance equipment produced by companies subject to the National Intelligence Law of the People’s Republic of China be removed from the UK Government’s procurement supply chain. The amendment also requires the government to commit to a plan for the removal of such surveillance equipment.

The government has acknowledged that surveillance equipment by companies such as Hikvision poses a security risk in the UK. Last November, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster stated that, following a security review, government departments had been ordered to cease any further installation of surveillance equipment by companies subject to China’s National Intelligence Law, such as Hikvision, and that they should consider removing them entirely.

Hikvision cameras have been found to have enabled the repression of Tibetan, Uyghurs and other Turkic peoples living under Chinese rule. This includes the use of Hikvision cameras in police stations, where they have been used during the torture and extraction of confessions from prisoners, and in internment camps that have held over a million Uyghurs.

The only way to ensure these cameras are removed from the UK is by committing the government to a clear timeframe. By supporting the amendment, you would also help ensure that the UK government distances itself from companies facilitating human rights abuses in Tibet and the Uyghur region.

I am looking forward to hearing from you,
