Today, on Holocaust Memorial Day, I join friends and allies in the Jewish community in mourning the 6 million Jewish lives lost during the Holocaust. Over recent days I have joined commemorative events, listened to community figures share their stories and knowledge, and have spoken alongside Holocaust survivors. These have been deeply moving experiences. I am honoured and grateful for the comfort, solidarity and amplification that Jewish communities have offered myself and my people.
More than 80 years since the Holocaust, the Uyghurs ask the world to recommit to its promise of ‘Never Again’. During the Holocaust far too many were indifferent or complicit in the Nazi’s crimes. Today, far too many – from business leaders to politicians – refuse to stand up to the Chinese state as they attempt to destroy Uyghur culture and life.
We must learn from the past, and refuse to remain silent as yet another community faces genocide.
